A PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
ANNOTATED EDITION

The Annotated Edition of the Home Education series makes it so much easier to read Charlotte’s volumes. The annotations are the key to better understanding; the open sesame; the key to unlocking the floodgate of Charlotte’s wisdom. Suddenly, the words soar.

Imagine what it will feel like to finally understand Charlotte’s words and then be able to incorporate all that wisdom into your homeschool. The Annotated Edition will help you create the homeschool you’ve always wanted.

ANNOTATED EDITION OF VOLUME 6 FEATURES

    • Includes the full, unabridged text of Charlotte Mason’s original Volume
    • The text has been updated with a modern font that is easier to read.
    • American spellings, not British, are used throughout.
    • The original page numbers, as published in earlier editions of Charlotte’s volumes, are in the margins so you can easily cross-reference other editions or study guides.
    • Annotations and definitions have been added.
    • Larger size with plenty of room for your own notes

The annotations provide context to help you better understand Charlotte’s frequent references to the people, events, and culture of her time. The annotations also define obscure vocabulary and phrases. For ease of reading, Charlotte’s text is in the inner column and The Plenary annotations are in the outer column.

YOU NEED CLARITY FOR A BETTER HOMESCHOOL

Charlotte wrote her six volumes of the Home Education Series from 1885-1921. Her frequent references can leave you frustrated and discouraged, as she assumed that her readers would understand the context for each person, event, or book that she mentions. Without that context, the wisdom of her words can seem veiled and inaccessible.

My goal in adding annotations is to highlight Charlotte’s text and make it easier to read so that you gain a deeper understanding of her words and meaning. Once you understand the references and the context, it is like the “a-ha” moment or the key to unlocking the gate.

ANNOTATED EDITION MAKES IT EASIER

The Annotated Edition makes it doable. It makes it easier on you and it saves you time. You don’t have to struggle with the outdated text and obscure words anymore!

Make it easier on yourself and get an Annotated Edition today! You deserve easier!

HERE’S WHAT OTHER FAMILIES ARE SAYING ABOUT THE
ANNOTATED EDITION

“WOW!!! I Love It!”
“I read this volume last year, but it was difficult to understand pieces of it, and frankly, I feel much of it went over my head. I love that not only have you defined many words for us (thank you!!), but you have set the people mentioned in their historical context and given us peaks into Charlotte’s life. It’s so inspiring to read and understand the people she is referring to in her writings. I am very grateful to have access to this in my beginning years as a CM educator. Thank you!” ~ Jessica

This Edition is Awesome! You’re Going to Love This Book!”
“Rachel has taken the time (so you don’t have to!) to track down the definitions of dated words, to find the obscure references, and to pull out the pithy nuggets from this volume. In short, she has made Charlotte Mason’s treatise of education more accessible than before.” ~ John and Crystal Schindele from the Charlotte Mason Says Podcast

“How Did We Ever Do This Without Annotations?”
“If you really want to read CM in study mode, this is the book to use. I have tried to read CM volumes for the longest time and yet, there are things that totally go over my head. However, in this book, from page 1 you already start to get a better picture of what she’s talking about by reading the annotations. How did we ever do this without them?” ~ Marcela

“Wonderful Annotations for Clarity and Ease of Reading”
“I love these Annotated Editions!! As a busy homeschooling mom, I’m am so THANKFUL that I don’t have to take extra time to look up all the undocumented quotations and obscure references in CM’s volume 1 and now volume 6! This is a huge time saver and makes the volumes so much more accessible. I have volume 6 in the original, an abridged volume 6, and now this – and this is the best of both worlds with all the original text and yet thorough annotations for clarity and ease of reading.” ~ Becky

3 reviews for A Philosophy of Education: Annotated Edition

  1. Kim

I absolutely love the annotated Volume 6. While I own the “pink set”, I found myself not reading it as often as I wanted for a variety of reasons, including lacking much of the cultural place and time Charlotte was experiencing. I felt it another thing “to-do” to look up what I wasn’t sure about and became discouraged. The annotated Volume 6 has made Charlotte’s writing accessible for the modern parent who may not have the time, energy, or desire to look up references to people and philosophies. I am so grateful for these, they fill such a need in my homeschooling life!

I love Charlotte Mason, and over time I’ve learned how to read her. But no matter how easily I can read her Victorian speech now, you still have to deal with all the completely unexplained references to the things she assumed readers would just know. She usually doesn’t even use first names when referring to famous writers and philosophers, so how am I supposed to know which one she means?? And no author for the books and poems mentioned! For years, I’ve mostly ignored the references and gleaned what I could based on context. Now I don’t have to! These annotated editions are an invaluable help!

I love these Annotated Editions!! As a busy homeschooling mom pursuing a PhD in education, I’m am so THANKFUL that I don’t have to take extra time to look up all the undocumented quotations and obscure references in CM’s volume 1 and now volume 6! This is a huge time saver, allows me to be accurate and clear in my citations of CM, and makes the volumes so much more accessible. I have volume 6 in the original, Mind to Mind (an abridged and lightly annotated volume 6), and now this–and, while those are wonderful, this is the best of both worlds with all the original text and yet thorough annotations for clarity and ease of reading. Thanks for all the hard work!
