Shakespeare in Audio and Video

I highly recommend listening to the dramatic audio version by Arkangel. In this production, Romeo is played by Joseph Fiennes, and Juliet is played by Maria Miles.

Or use this free version at Librivox.org.

If available, see the play performed live (either before or after reading the play).

If you can’t find a local performance, this production by the Royal Shakespeare Company is a great option. It is a recording of a live performance at the Globe Theater in London.

myShakespeare Website

MyShakespeare is a wonderful website to help you dive deeper into the play.

See the page for Romeo and Juliet here.

The site includes free audio of the play, context help, a personal Notebook for each user, and “Character Interviews” (which are quite fun!) like the one below for ACT I, Scene 1.

Shakespeare Retellings

And finally, a good retelling is always fun! If you’d like to start with a retelling, I highly recommend the picture book series by Bruce Colville or the retellings by Leon Garfield.

The retellings by Edith Nesbit or the ones by Charles and Mary Lamb are also good.

ACT I

PROLOGUE

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love,
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
