HELPING KIDS THROUGH A CRISIS

Parents, don’t be afraid to throw your schedule to the wind for a bit during this uncertain time. Some of the most important life lessons we learn are those that we learn from living life together!
Let me tell you a story from my childhood:
We had an ice storm in the Southeast when I was a kid, and we were without power for a week (and without school for most of that time too). My mom was pregnant with baby #5. We had no gas, some firewood that we burned through quickly, and not a hotel room in the city to be found.
We put quilts and tarps up over the windows and doors of the den. We all slept and lived in the same room that week. We cooked in the fireplace. We kept our food outside on the porch. We didn’t shower for a week (no hot water). We played Yahtzee by lantern light, and my mother read us Dealing with Dragons.
I am sure it was stressful for my parents, but all I remember about that time is what a fun adventure we had together as a family living life together.
That is what the Emergency / Crisis Curriculum is for … to give you ideas of some books that will become special to your family and remind them of family togetherness.
Here’s a video with some simple strategies to help children deal with a crisis, an emergency, or a trauma. Here are 5 ABCs that you want to keep in mind during a crisis:
