Romulus, Conqueror of Acron
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres
c. 1812
Tempera on Canvas
In the photo below, you can see this painting as it is displayed in the Amphitheater d’Honneur at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France.
It sits opposite an incredible mural called “L’Hémicycle des Beaux-arts” (also known as just the “Hemicycle”) by Paul Delaroche.
The mural represents seventy-five great artists of all ages. In the center of the mural, there are three thrones that depict the creators of the Parthenon: the sculptor Phidias, the architect Ictinus, and the painter Apelles, to symbolize the unity of these arts.
You can see more photos of the room here at the École des Beaux-Arts website.
And you can read more about the Hemicycle mural here on the Royal Collection Trust website.
