Learn a handicraft from a developmental approach! Amy Bodkin, EdS, is the Special Needs Consultant at A Charlotte Mason Plenary and an advocate for children with special needs at AmyBodkin.com.

Amy is uniquely qualified when it comes to teaching children with a wide range of developmental needs and subjects that emphasize “doing.” She strongly believes that families benefit – not from achieving perfection individually in an individual handicraft skill – but from deepening their relationships with the materials, techniques, and, most importantly, each other.

All of her classes are taught from a developmental approach and are open to the entire family, regardless of age or developmental level. You can learn more about Amy Bodkin here.

COURSE DESCRIPTION FROM AMY:

My favorite part of teaching handicrafts is helping children develop a relationship with different kinds of materials and techniques so they can use their creativity to come up with their own unique projects! Children are all different in when they are ready for different skills.

In this class we will be exploring the material of various kinds of fats! It’s so interesting to find out what we can do with a material that is usually seen as something you cook with or throw away! Pleae note that at least one of the projects we will be doing will involve using lye for soap-making which is rather dangerous and will require adult supervision. But I will do my best to provide a wide range of OPTIONS so that the entire family can participate in developing a relationship with fats and how common, everyday items are made.

Additionally, this will be a great class for those who are studying the Pioneer Era or The Great Depression!

Project options for each week include:

  1. Suet Block Bird Feeder, Fat Bombs, Olive Oil Cup Candles
  2. Rolled Beeswax Candles, Firestarters, Decorative Oil Lamp
  3. Poured Candles, Beeswax Ornaments, Sealing Wax
  4. Preserving Leaves for Decor, Dipped Candles, Wax Bowl
  5. Waterproof Food Baggies, Batik Fabric
  6. Crayons, Encaustic Painting
  7. Woodfiller, Conditioners, Etching Glass
