Learn a handicraft from a developmental approach! Amy Bodkin, EdS, is the Special Needs Consultant at A Charlotte Mason Plenary and an advocate for children with special needs at AmyBodkin.com.

Amy is uniquely qualified when it comes to teaching children with a wide range of developmental needs and subjects that emphasize “doing.” She strongly believes that families benefit – not from achieving perfection individually in an individual handicraft skill – but from deepening their relationships with the materials, techniques, and, most importantly, each other. All of her classes are taught from a developmental approach and are open to the entire family, regardless of age or developmental level. You can learn more about Amy Bodkin here.

COURSE DESCRIPTION FROM AMY:

My favorite part of teaching handicrafts is helping children develop a relationship with different kinds of materials and techniques so they can use their creativity to come up with their own unique projects! Children are ready for different skills at different times. My daughter was using real tools by the time she was 3 years old, but my son wasn’t able to use a hammer until he was 10 years old. Therefore, I will provide a wide range of options so that the entire family can participate in developing a relationship with wood and how we can work with it using manual hand tools. Project options include: string art, stool, sanding block, tic-tac-toe, pencil holder, candle holder, toy blocks, toy boat, cross cut box, and box.

CLASS DETAILS:

  • Day / Time: Start any time / Go at your own pace
  • Registration fee: $60
  • You will have access to this course for 5 months (150 days) from the date of purchase

REQUIRED MATERIALS (not included):

You MUST have safety glasses or goggles that fit each child and the following tools for the family to share: hammer, screwdrivers, handsaw, coping saw, tape measure, combination square, clamps, manual drill, and bits. It is preferable to have smaller-sized tools to make them easier to handle correctly. If you do not know what to get, I recommend these three sets (we will learn to use everything included in the following three sets):

OPTIONAL MATERIALS (not included):

  • You will need wood, nails, screws, sandpaper, glue, and finish, but the amount and type are optional. Options will be provided for each project.
  • Toy tool sets for children not yet ready to use real tools. It can be fun to learn to identify the tools and how they are used.
  • Book: Woodshop 101 for Kids

We LOVE any time we get to spend with Amy! Learning Woodworking with her was an added bonus! The kids learned so many new (practical!) skills and they have beautiful projects to show for their hard work. Thankful for Amy’s guidance, patience and enthusiasm… and thankful that The Plenary was able to offer a virtual class on a handicraft topic that I felt super intimidated by!

  2. Angela Gunning

My 13 year old daughter is taking Amy’s Woodworking 2 class and loves it! Amy is engaging, communicates clearly and connects very well with children of all ages and capabilities. Wonderful class!
